Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a Virginia pesticide license valid?
Most commercial pesticide licenses in Virginia are valid for two years. The deadline to complete your training is June 30 of the second year, with a 60-day grace period until August 29.
What happens if I miss the June 30th deadline in Virginia?
You have a 60-day grace period, until August 29, to earn your training credit. If you miss the grace period, your Virginia license is permanently voided and you must re-test for all categories.
Why is my individual renewal free in Virginia?
Effective March 2022, VDACS eliminated renewal fees for individual Commercial Applicators, Registered Technicians, and Private Applicators. You only pay an initial application fee of $25.00; after that, attending your required training maintains your license.
What is the difference between a Commercial Applicator and a Registered Technician in Virginia?
A Virginia Commercial Applicator can work independently and supervise others. A Registered Technician must have at least 40 hours of supervised training and pass the Core exam, and can only apply pesticides under the supervision of a Certified Applicator.
Can I complete Virginia recertification training online?
Yes. Virginia currently allows online recertification through approved vendors, provided the course is specific to the category being renewed.
How does Virginia renew my license after I finish training?
Once VDACS receives the training credit from the course provider, your Virginia license is automatically renewed and mailed to you at no additional cost.
What are the insurance requirements for a Virginia pesticide business license?
Every licensed pesticide business in Virginia must maintain liability insurance with minimum limits of $200,000 per occurrence and $400,000 annual aggregate for bodily injury and property damage.
Is a business license required in Virginia?
Yes. Pest control businesses in Virginia must hold a separate pesticide business license issued by VDACS.
What happens if my Virginia license expires?
You may not apply or supervise pesticide use in Virginia until your license is renewed and active.
